Basketball Fights for MIAC Title with 83-56 Win over Saint Mary's

The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (19-5 overall, 16-5 MIAC) defeated Saint Mary's 83-56 as the Blazers continue the race for the MIAC Regular Season Title.

CSB started the game with a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes.  Three minutes later, the Blazers were still up by five at 14-9 and started to pull ahead, compiling a 10-2 run to lead 24-11 with 10 minutes to go.  Five minutes later, CSB was still up by 13 points over Saint Mary's with a 31-18 score.  The Cardinals managed to close the gap to seven points heading into the locker room with a 35-28 Blazer lead.

The Blazers came out with a four-minute 13-6 run over the Cardinals to lead 48-34.  CSB kept on the pressure, extending its lead to 18 points at 54-36 with 13 minutes remaining.  Six minutes later, the Blazers had moved ahead to a 27 point lead at 70-43 with seven minutes remaining.  The Cardinals cut down the score to 21 points at 77-56 with two minutes left on the clock, but a 6-0 Blazer run finished the game 83-56.

Four Blazers scored in double digits, led by senior post Heather Gillund (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) with 17 points.  Sophomore forward Morgan Dale (Jamestown, ND, Jamestown) added 14 points while senior wings Amy Stifter (Watertown, MN, Watertown-Mayer) and Joelle Waytashek (Lino Lakes, MN, Centennial) contributed 12 and 10 points respectively.  Dale also grabbed eight rebounds for CSB.  Jessica Thone led the Cardinals with 17 points.

CSB plays its last regular season game at the University of St. Thomas on Sat., Feb. 19 at 1 p.m.  The winner of that game takes home a share of the MIAC Regular Season Title and a bye in the first round of the MIAC Playoff Tournament beginning next week.  Keep watching the Blazer website for the outcome of Saturday's game and where CSB stands in the playoffs.
