Basketball Cruises Past Carleton 68-37

The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (8-1 overall, 5-1 MIAC) breezed past Carleton 68-37 this evening in Claire Lynch Hall.

The Blazers started the first half on fire with a 16-0 lead over the Knights in the first 7:30 of play.  CSB continued its streak, compiling a 6-3 run over the next four minutes to lead 22-3.  With 8:30 left on the clock, both teams scored 13 points in the remainder of the half, with the Blazers heading into the locker room with a 35-16 lead.  CSB only committed three turnovers in the half, scoring 16 points off of Carleton's nine turnovers.

Carleton was able to outscore CSB 6-2 in the first three minutes of the second half, bringing the score within 15 at 37-22.  The Blazers kept their distance, stringing together a 10-1 run to lead 47-23 with 14 minutes left on the clock.  CSB continued to dominate the remainder of the game, leading by as much as 33 and winning 68-37.  The Blazers committed only three more turnovers in the second half.

Sixteen Blazers appeared in tonight's game, with 13 scoring.  CSB's bench players were part of the key in tonight's game, outscoring Carleton's bench 27-5.  Two Blazers led the team in scoring with 10 points each – senior post Heather Gillund (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) and sophomore point guard Whitney Canton (Pine Island, Minn., Pine Island).  Gillund also added six blocks, while senior forward Laura Canton (Pine Island, MN, Pine Island) pulled down seven rebounds.  The Knights were led by Akemi Arzouman who had 12 points.

CSB next travels to St. Paul, MN to take on Macalester on Wed., Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
