The College of Saint Benedict softball team split a pair of games with St. Catherine University in St. Paul on Thursday. The Blazers (3-5 MIAC, 8-14 overall) took the opener 4-1, but the Wildcats came up with a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat CSB 5-4 in the nightcap.
In game one, CSB took advantage of four SCU errors that led to a run in the fourth and sixth innings and a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Sophomore pitcher
Emma Alwin (Plymouth, MN, Wayzata) kept the Wildcats off balance by scattering seven hits, allowing one earned run, and striking out three to earn the win.
Juniors
Kristen Herges (Rochester, MN, John Marshall) and
Alyssa Kubesh and senior
Shannon Eveland (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove) led the CSB offense with two hits apiece. Herges added a triple, Kubesh scored a run, and Eveland added two runs scored. The Blazers tallied eight hits as a team.
In the nightcap, SCU got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. CSB answered in the top of fourth inning when Kubesh hit a solo home run over the centerfield fence. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Wildcats added three runs to take a 4-1 advantage, but the Blazers answered right back with a three-run top of the fifth inning. However, SCU came up with a clutch hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the game 5-4.
Junior
Carissa Hancock (Grand Rapids, MN, Grand Rapids) and sophomore
Sierra Dooley (Spring Lake Park, MN, Spring Lake Park) led the way for CSB in game two. Hancock went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored, and Dooley finished 3-for-3 with a double and a triple.
CSB will be back in action on Saturday, April 17 when they host Hamline University in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
