The College of Saint Benedict softball team opened up their season at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida with a split.  The Blazers used a six-run fifth inning to take control of the game against Alverno College but dropped a 3-1 decision to Ferrum College later on.

In Game 1, Alverno jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top half of the fourth inning.  CSB responded in the bottom half of the fourth inning when sophomore Lis Wieneke (New Ulm, MN, New Ulm) hit a two-run double down the right field line.  Alverno added a run to extend their lead to 4-2, but the Blazers used three extra base hits and two-RBI singles from Wieneke and junior Alyssa Kubesh (Buffalo Lake, MN, Buffalo Lake-Hector) in the fifth inning to take an 8-4 lead.

Sophomore Emma Alwin (Plymouth, MN, Wayzata) picked up the win and struckout five batters on the mound for the Blazers.  Wieneke went 2-for-3 with a run scored, a double, and four RBIs.  Junior catcher Carissa Hancock (Grand Rapids, MN, Grand Rapids) went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, and senior Shannon Eveland (Maple Grove, MN, Maple Grove) added a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.

In Game 2, it was CSB who scored first with a run in the second inning.  Ferrum answered with a run in the bottom half of the second inning and later added two runs in the sixth inning for the game's final score of 3-1.

Junior Elle Borba (Ontario, CA, St. Lucy's Priory) suffered the loss on the mound for the Blazers going six innings and giving up seven hits, all of which were singles.  Borba also led the CSB offensive attack going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.  Eveland and Wieneke added the only other hits for the Blazers.

CSB is back in action tomorrow, March 1st, at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida.  The Blazers play Beloit College at 9 am and York College at 1 pm.
