Late Game Heroics Lead Ice Hockey to 1-0 Win

BOX SCORE

First-year forward Christine Brodersen's (Shakopee, MN, Breck School) first goal as a Blazer could not have come at a more opportune time as the College of Saint Benedict (1-4-3, 1-2-3 MIAC) skated to their first conference victory, and first win of the season with a 1-0 victory tonight over Augsburg College.

With the win the Blazers shoot up the MIAC standings currently in sixth place with five points. The five point total with half the conference season remaining is one point less than the team achieved during the 2009-2010 year. With the top five teams advancing to the playoffs, Saint Benedict remains only two points away from fifth place Bethel University, who would hold the tie-breaker advantage should the two teams tie.

Picking up the action late in the third period in a game that had become a goalies duel, the Blazers Brodersen broke open the scoreless tie when her shot found the back of the net unassisted at 17:38. Despite the Auggies playing the final 01:23 with an open net and six skaters, Saint Benedict first-year goalie Kaitlyn Rolando (Lake Elmo, MN, Tartan High School) stopped all 21 total shots she faced in securing her first victory in net for the Blazers.

The Blazers return to action January 7th when they take on Bethel University in a non-conference game in Buffalo, Minnesota. On January 15th the Blazers take to the ice outside when they play Concordia College in a 2 pm match that will be the first conference game outdoors in the history of the MIAC.
