The Gustavus Adolphus College softball team pounded out 24 hits Saturday afternoon at CSB Field en route to a 8-0, 9-2 sweep of CSB. The College of Saint Benedict (5-7 MIAC, 9-15 overall) struggled to get anything going offensively on the day. Senior centerfielder Jillian Rigg (Billings, MT, Central Catholic) hit her first career homerun to score the Blazers' only two runs on the day.
In Game 1, GAC got on the board early with seven runs in the first three innings. Gustavus pitcher Betsie Collins held the Blazers in check as she struck out seven and only allowed two hits, which were singles by sophomores Carissa Hancock (Grand Rapids, MN, Grand Rapids) and Alyssa Kubesh (Buffalo Lake, MN, Buffalo Lake-Hector).
In Game 2, Gustavus continued their impressive offensive performance highlighted by two homeruns off the bat of senior shortstop Rachael Click. The Blazers rallied in the bottom of the fifth inning when Rigg hit a two-run home run over the left field fence scoring first-year utility player Kate Ulrich (Eden Prairie, MN, Eden Prairie), but it wasn't enough as GAC moved to 14-0 in conference play. Senior Genna Strauss (Red Wing, MN, Red Wing) went 3-for-4 in the game with a double, while Rigg finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs to lead the CSB offense.
CSB will be back in action tomorrow, April 19 when they host Carleton College in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
