The College of Saint Benedict softball team pounded out 13 hits and scored 11 runs in Game 1 against Macalester Tuesday afternoon but struggled to find any offense until late in Game 2. The Blazers defeated the Scots 11-2 in the opener and droppd the nightcap by a score of 6-4.
In Game 1, CSB entered the bottom of the third inning trailing 3-2. The Blazers' bats came alive in the third as they tallied eights runs on seven hits to take a commanding lead. Sophomores Carissa Hancock (Grand Rapids, MN, Grand Rapids) and Devin Bowlin (Winona, MN, Winona Cotter) combined for five RBIs in the inning.
Kristen Herges (Rochester, MN, John Marshall) led the CSB offense in Game 1 going 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Bowlin added a 2-for-3 performance with three RBIs, Abby Richardson (Storm Lake, IA, St. Mary's) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Alyssa Kubesh (Buffalo Lake, MN, Buffalo Lake-Hector) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. First-year pitcher Emma Alwin (Plymouth, MN, Wayzata) picked up the win on the mound for CSB. Alwin held MAC to seven hits and struckout two.
In Game 2, Macalester jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the fourth inning. The Blazers got on the board in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Herges that scored Lis Wieneke (New Ulm, MN, New Ulm). CSB rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring three runs, but it wasn't enough as MAC picked up their second win in the MIAC with the 6-4 victory.
Seniors Jillian Rigg (Billings, MT, Central Catholic) and Genna Strauss (Red Wing, MN, Red Wing) both went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the CSB offense.
The Blazers will be back in action on Thursday, April 16th when they travel to Northfield, Minn. to take on St. Olaf. The doubleheader starts at 4 p.m.
