Despite a struggle in the first half, the College of Saint Benedict basketball team (21-2 MIAC, 24-3 overall) defeated Bethel University (13-9 MIAC, 15-12 overall) in 66-61 to advance to the MIAC Playoff Championship tomorrow in Claire Lynch at 7:30 p.m.
Turnovers were the factor in the first half that kept the Blazers lagging behind the Royals. CSB was 12-for-23 from the field, shooting a high 52% in the first half, but the Blazers' 18 turnovers were 18 shot opportunities that they were not able to capitalize on. Despite this, CSB only hung behind Bethel 35-28 at the half.
Bethel still maintained their lead throughout the beginning of the second half, but CSB finally found a lead at 38-37 with 13 minutes remaining. Four lead changes over the next three minutes still found the Blazers in the lead 45-44, where they stayed until the Royals inched forward 54-52 with five minutes left.
With two minutes remaining on the clock, the the crowd rose to their feet as CSB grasped the lead for the final time at 60-59. The Blazers were 6-for-6 from the free throw line these last two minutes, allowing them to win 66-61.
Senior forward Ariel Tauer (Edina, MN, Edina) led the Blazers with 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. Sophomore wing Joelle Waytashek (Lino Lakes, MN, Centennial) had nine points, all of which came from three-pointers. Sophomore post Danielle Frank (Caledonia, MN, Caledonia) had eight points, nine rebounds, and two blocked shots.
The Blazers will host Concordia in the MIAC Playoff championship tomorrow, Sat., Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Live Stats will be available on the Blazer Basketball website.
