Blazers Ease Past St. Catherine University 88-63

The College of Saint Benedict basketball team (5-1 overall, 3-0 MIAC) held St. Catherine University to 14 points below their 77 points per game average in an 88-63 Blazer win in Claire Lynch Hall tonight.

With 17 minutes left on the clock, the score was tied at eight.  Despite six Blazer turnovers in the first seven minutes of the game, CSB was ahead 13-10 with 13 minutes left on the clock.  The Blazers were ahead 21-15 with nine minutes remaining before the Wildcats hit two quick three-pointers to tie the score at 21.  CSB began to inch ahead, compiling a 22-7 run over SCU in the last five minutes of the half.  As 20 seconds remained in the half, junior point guard Devin Bowlin (Winona, MN, Winona Cotter) put up an impressive three-point shot, which ended with a swish as head coach Mike Durbin resonated "Get in!" to end the half in a 43-28 Blazer lead.

The Wildcats attempted to close the gap, bringing the score within nine at the 15:30 mark.  With 11:30 to go, CSB was still ahead by nine points, but a 20-6 run extended the lead at 77-54 and secured the win for CSB at 88-63.

CSB had a stunning team field goal percentage of 55%, included shooting 11-for-22 at 50% from the three-point line.  The Blazers were led by first-year post Kailyn Wilcox (St. Paul, Minn., Cretin-Derham Hall), who was 7-for-8 from the field, includind 2-for-2 from behind the arc for a career-high 16 points.  Junior wing Amy Stifter (Watertown, MN, Watertown-Mayer) added 13 points, while junior forward Laura Canton (Pine Island, MN, Pine Island) contributed 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Blazers travel to St. Paul, Minn., to take on Macalester on Wed., Dec. 9 before the holiday break.  They are back at home on Sat., Jan. 2 as they host St. Mary's at 3 p.m.
