Blazers Defeat St. Kate's, Durbin Clinches Win 499

12/09/2008

Head women's basketball coach Mike Durbin clenched his 499th win tonight as the College of Saint Benedict basketball team defeated the College of St. Catherine 66-59 in St. Paul, Minn.

Play started off even between the two teams, as they exchanged basket for basket to tie the score 4-4 with 18 minutes left in the half.  However, St. Kate's hit a quick jump shot, and from there they were CSB only obtained the lead twice, never increasing the margin greater than one point.  The Blazers hung on, and a layup from sophomore Danielle Frank (Caledonia, MN, Caledonia) tied the game at 30 heading into the locker room at halftime.

The second half started off much like the first, as both teams match basket for basket, leaving a tied score of 35-35 with 18 minutes left again.  However, this time a different team pulled off the lead.  A 3-pointer by sophomore Amy Stifter (Watertown, MN, Watertown-Mayer) brought the Blazers up 38-35, and that's where the lead remained.  CSB pulled off the win 66-59, bringing head coach Mike Durbin closer to his coaching milestone.

Frank led the Blazers with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks, while Stifter also contributed 13 points after sitting out Saturday's game against Carleton with a back injury.  Senior Ariel Tauer (Edina, MN, Edina) and junior Mindy Schmidt (Brooklyn Park, MN, Champlin Park) also chipped in 11 points toward the win.

The Blazers next head home to take on the Scots of Macalester on Wed., Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m.  This game will determine who will hold first place in the MIAC, as both schools have a 3-0 conference record.
