Schmidt Breaks School Record as Blazers Defeat Knights

12/06/2008

Before today, the school record for 3-pointers made in a single game was seven.  Junior Mindy Schmidt (Brooklyn Park, MN, Champlin Park) broke that record, sinking a phenomenal 8 of 10 and taking the Blazers to a 74-56 conference win against Carleton College today in Claire Lynch Hall.

The previous record was set on against Macalester on Jan. 9, 1991 by Joyce Spanier.  Schmidt als tied the MIAC record of 3-pointers made in a single game, which five other players hold.

Carleton took an early 2-0 lead over CSB with two made free throws.  However, the Blazers answered six seconds later with Schmidt's first 3-pointer of the afternoon.  The Knights responded with a 3-pointer of their own to give them a 5-3 edge over CSB.  However, two jump shots later, the Blazers regained the lead with 15 minutes left in the half.  They slowly maintained their lead, heading into the locker room with a score of 30-24.

The Blazers never lost sight of the prize, pulling ahead of the Knights and winning with a final score of 74-56.  The primary reason for this was the Schmidt, who scored 23 points and was 7 of 9 from beyond the 3-point line in the second half alone.

Schmidt led CSB with a game-high 28 points, 24 of which were outside the arc.  Sophomore Heather Gillund (Ham Lake, MN, Blaine) added 12 points to the score, while sophomore Danielle Frank (Caledonia, MN, Caledonia) dominated the boards, pulling down 12 rebounds.

This marks head coach Mike Durbin's 498th career win, bringing him even closer to number 500.

The Blazers next take on the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn. on Mon., Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
