ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Sidney Schiffler made her presence known in both the College of Saint Benedict basketball team’s wins this past week.
She hit the game-winning 3-pointer Wednesday in a big MIAC win over Bethel and hit a pair of free throws and another late three to seal a win over Macalester. For her big performances in a pair of key conference games, Schiffler is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.
To start the week, Schiffler scored 10 points in the team’s upset of the Royals, who are currently third in the MIAC. The first of her 10 points – which all came in the second half – were a pair of layups to put CSB up early in the third quarter. Schiffler added a three to start the fourth quarter and give her team a four-point cushion, and she hit her second three of the game with 11 seconds left to play. With the game tied 78-78, Schiffler took a pass from Megan Thompson and banked in a three that would end up being the game winner.
There was no game-winning shot Saturday against the Scots, but with Macalester pushing and threatening to take the lead late, Schiffler hit a pair of free throws and then hit a three with 1:17 left to put CSB up nine and help seal the win. She finished that game with 16 points.
On the week, Schiffler averaged 13 points, five rebounds and 4.5 assists. She picked up a career-high seven rebounds Wednesday against Bethel, and added five assists Saturday against Macalester. Schiffler shot better than 50 percent from the field on the week and hit 6-of-11 3-pointers she attempted.
Schiffler is currently tied for the team lead with 54 assists, and she leads the team and is fourth in the MIAC with a .425 three-point percentage.
After Saturday’s win, CSB is 12-9 overall and 8-6 and tied for fifth in the MIAC. Saint Benedict is on the road for a trio of games before wrapping up the regular season at home on Feb. 16. The first of the team’s road games is Wednesday, Feb. 6, when it travels to Moorhead to take on Concordia at 5:45 p.m.
