ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team picked up two big, much-needed wins last week, and leading the way in both games was sophomore Megan Thompson.

Thompson led the team in scoring in both games, and blew past her previous career high Saturday in CSB’s home win against St. Olaf, which pushed its current winning streak to three games. For her big week, Thompson is both the CSB Athlete of the Week and the MIAC Athlete of the Week. This is the first weekly MIAC honor of her Saint Benedict basketball career; she earned the honor once with the soccer team as a first year in 2017.

Thompson – who has scored in double digits 12 times this season and led the team in scoring six times – had her biggest game of the season Saturday against the Oles. With members of the 1998-99 national runner-up team in attendance, she scored 12 first-quarter points en route to a career-high 27 points to help the team to a 26-points win – its third home win of the year. She went 11-for-17 from the field and hit three 3-pointers, and she also had five steals.

Thompson started her week with a team-high 15 points Wednesday in CSB’s road win at Gustavus. That win was the second of the season over the Gusties for CSB – its first sweep of Gustavus since 2010-11. The loss was just the second home loss of the year for Gustavus. Thompson had nine points in the first half to help CSB jump to a big lead in St. Peter.

When all was said and done last week, Thompson averaged 21 points, 3.5 steals and 2.5 rebounds per game and shot 60 percent from the field. She currently leads the team and is 11th in the MIAC in scoring at 13.3 points per game. She is also sixth in the league with 36 total steals.

Thompson and her teammates are at home against this Wednesday, Jan. 16, when they host St. Kate’s at 7 p.m. in Claire Lynch. After that, Saint Benedict is on the road for three straight games.
