ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Madison Weiss has been a picture of consistency for the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team, and this past weekend was no different.
On the road against two of the top teams in the MIAC, Weiss recorded double-digit kills to lead CSB in a pair of key conference matches, and also played a big role for the team’s defense at the net. For her steady play over the weekend, Weiss is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.
To start the team’s big weekend, Weiss led the team with 13 kills in a four-set win at St. Olaf. She hit .357 to help CSB pick up its 21
st win of the season and improve to 8-0 in MIAC play for the first time since 2008. She also had six total blocks against a tough Ole offense.
Saturday, Weiss and CSB went up against Gustavus in a battle of the MIAC unbeatens. The Gusties prevailed in a four-set victory, but Weiss had another big match to keep her team in it. She led the team once again with 13 kills – the 15
th time this season she has recorded double-digit kills – and hit a team-high .458 hitting percentage. She also had four total blocks against the Gusties.
After another big weekend, Weiss continues to lead the MIAC – and Division III – with 145 total blocks, and she also leads Division III with 1.53 blocks per set. She is also seventh in the MIAC with 270 kills. Weiss is currently 17 kills away from the 500-kill milestone, and she also has 259 total blocks in her career. She is currently 47 blocks away from the school record for blocks in a season, which was set in 1999 by Carrie Otis when she recorded 192 blocks.
Weiss and Saint Benedict have two games left in the regular season. The team hosts Macalester at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Claire Lynch, and is on the road at Concordia Saturday to end the regular season.
