ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – There is no doubt that the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team performed above and beyond this weekend, but one athlete in particular was consistent throughout the weekend in Atlanta. Liz Shultz, a sophomore middle blocker from Alexandria, Minn., had a big weekend at the net for Saint Benedict, thus making her this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.
This past weekend, the volleyball team played in the Emory Classic in Atlanta, Ga., with Shultz helping them go 2-2 at the tournament. She had a significant contribution to the team win over No. 4 Emory with 13 kills and three blocks, bringing the team to a 3-2 victory. Due to her optimal performance, Shultz was named to the Emory Classic All-Tournament team.
Shultz started the weekend by helping the team in a 3-0 win over St. Mary’s with nine kills and 4 blocks. In a 3-2 loss against No. 25 UW-Oshkosh, Shultz still brought her game and had a team-high and career-high of 13 kills, and she also had four blocks. Finally, in a game against Birmingham-Southern the team lost 3-0, but Shultz still brought eight kills to the table.
After four matches, Shultz leads the team with 11 blocks and is second on the team with 43 kills. With her impressive record and success so far this season Shultz is definitely one to look out for in upcoming matches. Schultz and her teammates are on the road again this weekend when they travel to Stevens Point, Wis., for the UW-Stevens Point Tournament. CSB plays Stevens Point and Bethany Lutheran Friday, Sept. 9, and Aurora and Bethel Saturday, Sept. 10.
