ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Alison Newton picked a good time to have the best game of her career.
 
The College of Saint Benedict scored 14 first-half points against UW-Superior on Nov. 24 and was down 25-14 at halftime. Newton came out after halftime and scored 17 points to help turn the game around and lift the Blazers to a 62-51 victory.
 
For her big game, Newton has been named the CSB Athlete of the Week.
 
The Blazers (4-1) were down 14-7 after the first quarter, and trailed Superior 27-15 at halftime in the fourth game in five days for CSB last week. Saint Benedict shot just over 17 percent in the first half and only converted four of eight free-throw attempts.
 
CSB turned things around in the third quarter but still trailed by one late, then Newton took over in the fourth.
 
The Oronoco, Minn., native hit a three early in the fourth quarter to push CSB’s lead to seven, 44-37. A few minutes later she converted a three-point play to keep it an eight-point game, and she went 5-for-6 from the line in the final 1:12 of the game to help put the Blazers out of the Yellowjackets’ reach.
 
When all was said and done, Newton scored a game-high 20 points – which blew away her previous career-high of 10 points, set on Jan. 3, 2015, against Bethel. She went 4-for-6 from the field, made the one 3-pointer she attempted and also finished the night 11-for-14 from the line. Newton also had three rebounds and three assists.
 
Newton’s big night came after scoring five points, pulling down five rebounds and dishing out four assists in the team’s 60-56 win over Martin Luther Nov. 23 in New Ulm.
 
Through five games, Newton is fourth on the team with 8.6 points per game and she leads the team with 2.6 assists per game. She is shooting .500 from the field, and is second on the team with a .676 free-throw percentage. Newton is 12th in the MIAC in assists per game.
 
Newton and the Blazers open MIAC play Wednesday, Dec. 2, when they host Carleton at 7 p.m. in Claire Lynch. The Blazers are also at home Dec. 5 and Dec. 9 and play at Bethel on Dec. 12 before the holiday break.
