ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – As a sophomore in 2013-14, Mattie Lueck stepped in as one of the College of Saint Benedict basketball team’s top scorers and was rewarded at the end of the season with all-conference honorable mention accolades.
Lueck was quiet in comparison in the Blazers’ first two games of the season, but she broke out in a pair of games on the West Coast this past weekend.
After leading CSB in scoring in two games and helping the Blazers to a 1-1 record in Seattle, Wash., Lueck has been named the Blazer Athlete of the Week.
Lueck, a 6-foot junior forward, led the Blazers in scoring, rebounding and blocks in a 75-54 loss to Puget Sound Friday night in Seattle. The Pequot Lakes, Minn., native scored 16 points and added 10 rebounds and four blocks to her stat line.
Saturday, Lueck led the Blazers once again in a 75-71 win that bumped Saint Benedict’s record back to .500 at 2-2. She scored 16 points and also finished the night with five assists, two rebounds and one blocked shot.
In two games in Seattle, Lueck averaged 16 points, six rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 blocked shots. Those numbers brought her season scoring average up to 11 points per game, good for second on the team. She is also second with six rebounds and leads the team with 10 blocked shots and nine assists.
Lueck and the Blazers are off for Thanksgiving break and return to action Wednesday, Dec. 3, when they host Concordia College in their MIAC opener. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Claire Lynch.
