ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Lauren Wise picked a good weekend to shoot a career-low.
Wise, a junior on the College of Saint Benedict golf team, shot career-low 18- and 36-hole scores Saturday and Sunday at the Blazer Invite. Those career lows not only helped Wise win individual medalist honors, but they played a large role in helping CSB defend its title and its home invite.
For her consistent play over the weekend, Wise has been named the Blazer Athlete of the Week.
Wise was tied for second after day one of the Blazer Invite, held at Blackberry Ridge in Sartell, Minn. She shot a 76 – a career best – Saturday, and finished the first round tied for second with teammate Grace Todora. Sunday, she one-upped herself.
Wise, a Prior Lake, Minn., native, shot a field-low 75 in the second round to pull ahead of St. Cloud State’s Laurel Enstrom by a single stroke. The 75 was not only a career-best for Wise, it also tied for the fifth-best 18-hole individual score in Blazer golf history.
Wise’s 36-hole total of 151 is tied for second best in CSB golf history. The school 36-hole scoring record is 149, set in 2010 by Kathryn Hauff. Sunday also marked the first win for Wise in her collegiate golf career.
The record-setting day helped Saint Ben’s defend its home course, and its Blazer Invite title. CSB also won at last year’s home invite. Sunday’s win marked the second win this season, and the second time the Blazers have swept individual and team medalist honors. Saint Benedict has finished in the top three in the past four tournaments it has played.
Wise and the Blazers get a weekend off before ending the fall season at the MIAC Championships. The championships run Oct. 4-6 at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids, Minn.
