ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict softball team had a busy weekend, and Gabby Spencer played a big role in making sure that her team came away successful.
The Bennies went 5-1 over the weekend with a pair of home MIAC sweeps, and Spencer was right in the thick of the action all weekend. She led Saint Benedict at the plate, and also made some big plays from center field – including a catch that saved a win and a sweep of Gustavus Sunday.
For her impressive weekend, Spencer is both the CSB Athlete of the Week and the MIAC Player of the Week. This marks her second weekly MIAC award of the season, and she is the first Bennie softball player to earn to awards in the same season since Sara Wenerstrand in 2017.
Spencer started the weekend with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate Friday afternoon in Game 2 against Carleton. She hit an RBI triple in the second inning and added an RBI single in the third to help the game end in five innings. She added two more hits to her weekly total in Game 2 against Augsburg Saturday, and really came alive at the plate Sunday against Gustavus.
Spencer finished Sunday’s doubleheader 5-for-6 with a solo home run in the third inning of the first game to help keep the Bennies ahead. She helped her cause at center field, and ended Game 2 of the doubleheader in the Bennies’ favor when she caught a long fly ball to center with the bases loaded and two outs for the Gusties in the top of the seventh.
In six games, Spencer batted .611 after finishing 11-for-18. She drew four walks and also went 4-for-5 on stolen-base attempts. She also tallied seven putouts with no errors from center.
Spencer looks to keep that momentum going Wednesday as the team heads to Arden Hills for a big MIAC doubleheader against league-leading Bethel. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
