Gabby Spencer CSB AOW (3/22/21)

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – As a first year in 2020, Gabby Spencer started the season batting first in the lineup for the College of Saint Benedict softball team, but moved down a few spots when her teammates stepped up and earned their spot at the top.

As a sophomore in 2021, Spencer isn’t looking to give up that leadoff spot any time soon.

In four games this weekend, Spencer batted .500 with a double, three home runs, two walks and six RBIs to pace the CSB offense. For her big weekend to help the team go 3-1 and improve to 6-2 overall, Spencer is this week’s CSB Athlete of the Week.

Spencer – the team’s starting center fielder – recorded a single hit in each of the team’s two games against UW-Eau Claire Saturday afternoon, but she made those two hits count. Her hit in the first game of the doubleheader was a two-run homer in the second inning to tie the game 2-2 to help the Bennies get on the board en route to an eventual 5-3 win. Her hit in the second game against the Blugolds was also a two-run homer – also in the second inning – as part of a six-run inning for CSB, which won 9-1 in six innings.

Sunday against UW-Stout, Spencer started the game by getting hit by a pitch, and she came around to score on an RBI single by Katie Carlson. She hit an RBI single in the second inning to help the Bennies mount an 8-0 lead, and put a stop to any thoughts the Blue Devils had of a comeback with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Spencer went 2-for-3 in the nightcap against Stout – a 6-5 loss – including a leadoff double to start the game.

Spencer finished the weekend 6-for-12 with a double, three home runs, two walks, one hit by pitch and six RBIs. She is currently second on the team with a .423 batting average and 11 hits, and is tied with Carlson for the MIAC lead with 12 RBIs.

Spencer and the Bennies are scheduled to be back in action and back at home starting at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, against UW-Stevens Point.
